Athens

We arrived yesterday morning around 10am local time. Our flight (Air Canada Rouge) from Toronto to Athens was delayed a bit so they could change a tire on the airplane. No problem, but when we got on the plane we were not happy to see that it was quite old, had no tvs or any evidence of entertainment, nor USB ports (this was a 10 hr flight!). Everyone around us was unhappy about it, including some older Greek people who were quite entertaining with their animated conversation, which of course we didn't understand. The flight was ok despite the lack of entertainment, and the scenery near the end of the trip was amazing, as we flew over the Alps on our way from France/Switzerland/Italy to Greece.

There was a big demonstration taking place yesterday morning in Athens, and some of the roads near our hotel were closed, but our taxi driver did a great job getting us to the door. Ferries and metro were also shut down for the whole weekend due to labour protests. We are a week away from needing the ferries, so we're keeping our fingers crossed that there won't be further action that would affect us. Apparently 500 Bulgarian tourists were stranded on Santorini this weekend!

Yesterday was a bit of a blur for us, but we did get out a bit and explore. The highlight of the whole day was our dinner last night in a little taverna, with two fellows sitting outside playing tradional Greek bouzoukia music while we ate. It couldn't have been more perfect.

Today will be busy, as we will be seeing the Acropolis among other sights, after we fortify ourselves with a good breakfast buffet at our hotel! Our friends arrive from Denmark tonight, and we will have one more day in Athens before leaving on our five day tour of the Mainland on Monday morning.

More later.....

Linda
